Also, it instills a sense of assurance in your ability to style your curls. Because I have done it before, I know it works. You would definitely get noticed in this outfit. On top of all that, it’s aesthetically pleasing and captivating. Elegant is the best word to describe them. Curls, on the other hand, elevate the style of your braids to something more refined. In the same way that the beads elevate your braids, the curls do the same for your hair. This hairstyle brings out your fresh, young look. The style also provides an additional benefit of making you appear older than you actually are. If you enjoy beaded tribal braids, knotless braids should come easily. You can add the finishing touch to your braids by accessorizing them. This style of hair is perfect for basking in the sun or heading to the beach. The style requires little effort, and it would shield your hair from the elements.Īnother plus is that it prevents your hair from sticking to the braids in humid climates. Loose knotless braids are a great option if you’re looking for a style that won’t constrict or feel too tight. This is dedicated to my female friends who wear their hair natural or are in the process of making that change. In addition, having neat, symmetrical lines across your head is very cute. Your triangle cut will look even more stunning with a knotless braid, as the braid will be initiated by your hair.īecause of this, natural hair and braiding hair are easily interchangeable and complementary to one another. The underlying angular cuts of the triangle cut have always appealed to me, so it has always been one of my favorite styles. You’d adore this cut because of how well it frames your face and minimizes your features. Also, unlike with conventional jumbo braids, you won’t have to worry about adding extra weight to your hair. Modern and understated best describe the design. ![]() If you’re a fan of large braids, you should put jumbo knotless braids at the top of your list of favorites. However, if you’re ready to give the hairstyle a shot, you can begin with these chic knotless braid styles. It’s difficult to pick a favorite version of the fascinating hairstyle because it comes in so many forms. ![]() Knot-free braids work well on both unprocessed and chemically-processed hair. As a result, it’s all the rage in cyberspace at the moment. It’s the standard hair for ladies who want to protect their hair without sacrificing style. If your scalp is sore and sensitive, your hair is almost certainly salvageable. In addition to relieving you of tight knots and pain, this protective style will also keep your hair from becoming tangled and giving you headaches. If you’re sick of dealing with the discomfort of braids, this is a viable option to relieve your head and neck aches. As a result, you now have painless and feathery braids attached to your head. The braid is begun with the person’s own hair, and the braiding hair is gradually woven in. Artificial braids can be patched in using this method. Instead of tying a knot to begin your braid, you feed in the yarn at the end of your previous braid. In this braid style, the knots at the base of your hair are avoided. The knotless braid is an alternative to the box braid. The distinctive characteristics of this hairstyle, however, have caused it to make a dramatic comeback. What is a Knotless Braid?Ī knotless braid is not a novel hairdo, as I’ve already mentioned. I won’t bother you with questions about why you haven’t tried the no-hassle hairstyle yet, but if you’re here, you’ve come to the right place to find out what’s been all the rage on social media and to select your preferred style to take you from average to cutting-edge. If you don’t join the current movement, you may soon find yourself in the minority. In addition, the popularity of the hairstyle is increasing because social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are promoting the style’s positive aspects. Ultimately, Christian or non-Christian, no matter your age or nationality, faith comes down to these battles in the heart. my struggle was with Christianity in my own heart" Rodrigues replies. "You were defeated by this swamp of Japan." "No, no. "Father, you were not defeated by me," Inoue says to Rodrigues. It is amazing to consider that this book was a huge seller in Endo's native Japan, which itself is barely 1% Christian. Is it possible to betray your faith but stay true to your God? Endo's frank look at questions like this is part of his universal success. A Catholic himself, it is obvious that Endo has struggled over these questions himself, searching for answers. "Silence" raises several theological points, but the two that stuck with me the most were the following: how can God remain silent despite the suffering of his people (a question no less relevant with the events going on in the world today), and secondly, is it possible that Christianity cannot "grow roots" in the "swamp" that is Japan. That Endo could weave so elegant a tale, using a foreign main character (there are few precedents in Japanese literature) and frequently changing narrative styles no less, is an accomplishment in itself. The Christian period of Japan is regarded as a somewhat curious anomaly by the Japanese themselves, and is largely unknown in western circles. This question, raised countless times by the main character Rodrigues, is just one of many theological issues that Endo explores in this highly emotional, extremely probing novel. This is a moving book, often understated and never melodramatic. While books such as Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth" gave a deeper view of Asian life, Endo focuses on the Lord's face and silence in the midst of turmoil. The "swamp" that Inoue refers to is not only Japan, but that of any soul struggling to understand God. I had hoped for a bit more historical and social exploration of this time period in Japan's history, but Endo does a wonderful job of charting the human soul's journey through the quagmires of faith. Where is God's voice? Why is God silent? The beleaguered priest wrestles with these issues, while still longing to see the face of his beloved Lord. ![]() It's a question that plagues Rodrigues, even as he faces difficulty and the chance to apostasize. If this is so, Inoue wants to know, then why is the wife so barren in Japan? In Rodrigues' mind, Christianity (namely, Catholicism and the universal church) is the only true wife. In Inoue's words, Christianity is like an extra, unwanted wife in the Japanese household of religion. Rodrigues watches men and women be martyred, then finds himself imprisoned while an interrogator named Inoue slowly breaks his morale through intellectual and physical means. He tells of his fervent love for the face of the Lord, his increasing respect for the Japanese, and his recurring troubles with a cowardly man named Kichijiro, who has already apostasized once before. The majority of the story is told through letters by Rodrigues. Rodrigues and Garrpe arrive in a small seaside village, where they spend much time in hiding, slowly disseminating the gospel to the locals. No word has come from Ferreira, and so two more priests leave Portugal, sailing for Macao, then Japan, in an effort to find their comrade and continue his secretive work. Indeed, it is rumored that one Portuguese man-of-the-cloth, Christovao Ferreira, has done just that. Graham Greene, one of my favorite authors, called this book "one of the finest novels of our time." With that high praise, I bought a copy of Endo's "Silence," and immersed myself in the missionary world of 17th century Japan.Īfter some fruitful years in this "swamp," Christianity has fallen on hard times, with increasing pressure on believers and priests to apostasize. I guess Florence had never seen a man so big. The Man from Bodie drank down a half bottle of the Silver Sun's best that cleared the dust from his throat and then when Florence, who was a redhead, moved along the bar to him, he turned and grinned down at her. The book opens with two great paragraphs that plunge us right into the middle of the action in no-nonsense fashion: One of the things I like best about Welcome to Hard Times is the control Doctorow has over the language, as sure and firm as a well-seasoned cowboy in the saddle who refuses to let the bronc get away from him. I’ve never met a literary cowboy as fearsome as the Man from Brodie-think Jack Palance in Shane….then multiply him by ten. Here, the Old West is pure invention and it’s pure terror. If you’ve read those books, however, and come to Welcome Hard Times expecting to see historical figures like Billy the Kid or Wyatt Earp woven into the narrative, you’ll be disappointed. As in his other novels like Ragtime, Doctorow celebrates the endurance of the American spirit. There is no High Noon Gary Cooper here, Doctorow seems say as he illustrates that famous saying: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”ĭoctorow is pretty heavy on the symbolism here-the Earth is scorched, the phoenix rises, the will of man triumphs. While the Man from Bodie is rampaging through the early pages of the book, the stunned and frightened citizens go jelly-legged-especially after the MFB’s first victim, one brave man who dared to confront the villain with a single stick of wood, comes reeling out of the saloon doors with his head bashed in and dies before the sun goes down. It’s also about how the oppressed citizens rebuild their hope in the wake of complete disaster. Welcome to Hard Times centers on how the town (if that’s what you can call a few ramshackle board-and-tarpaper buildings) is rebuilt from its ashes. The cowboy with no name is known simply as the Man from Bodie and once he destroys the North Dakota town of Hard Times (those events listed above all happen in the first chapter, by the way), he rides off into the horizon…momentarily leaving the rest of Hard Times’ diverse set of characters to pick up the pieces. Everything else on today’s to-do list can wait. I’m practicing what I preach: this morning, I picked up the novel and started re-reading it for the third time. There’s nothing pretty inside these pages but once you start reading, I dare you to set the book down again. Published in 1960 (and made into a not-as-good movie starring Henry Fonda in 1967), it’s a grim look at the Old West. Welcome to Welcome to Hard Times, Doctorow’s first novel. ![]() to automatically generate captions when the video’s creator has not added them manually. That’s because you might not be seeing subtitles simply because they are turned off. ![]() That is to say it could be solved within the options menu of your very own YouTube profile. Subtitles May Be Disabled in Your Settings Of course, that won’t be viable for everyone, and there’s no guarantee the video’s creator will respond favorably or even at all. Our best suggestion would be to reach out to the creator of the video and ask them directly if they’d consider adding subtitles.Īlternatively, if you’re willing to do the work yourself, you could offer to transcribe the video for them and let them upload the results. Unfortunately, we don’t have a fix for this one, because it’s not something within the viewer’s control. There is also an automated system intended to fill in subtitles on videos where the creator did not do it manually, but more on this in a bit.įor the moment, the point is that the number one reason you might not be seeing subtitles on a video is quite simple: the video’s creator did not add any subtitles. This is something every creator can do, but sadly, not something that every creator chooses to do. This means they personally transcribe what they said in the video into text, and add that text manually as subtitles. When a creator uploads a video, they have the opportunity to add hand-crafted subtitles themselves. ![]() To fully understand why you might not be seeing subtitles/captions on any given YouTube video, we’ll have to break down exactly how those captions get generated in the first place.
